Post Secondary:Polytechnic
Post Secondary:Polytechnic
Admission to Polytechnic through the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE), are based on GCE “O” level exam results, using an aggregate computation of ELR2B2, which stands for English Language (EL) + 2 Relevant Subjects (R2) + 2 Best Subjects (B2), a total of 5 subjects. The net ELR2B2 score should not be more than 26 points except for the Diploma in Nursing where the requirement is not more than 28 points. Results may be combined from no more than 2 sittings of the O-Level examinations.
In addition, both students from mainstream secondary schools and private candidates are entitled to minus a maximum of 2 bonus points from CCA as per the following table, to derive at a net aggregate score.
Co-Curricular Activities, CCA | CCA grade | |

The ELR2B2 are further split into ELR2B2-A, ELR2B2-B, ELR2B2-C & ELR2B2-D net aggregate score types.
This enables each polytechnic to assess a student’s eligibility to the different type of courses
Polytechnics offer a large range of courses under different faculties. Hence, it is advisable to go to each respective poly’s website via the names to find out the exact details.
1. The 5 Polytechnics (poly) by alphabetical order are as follow: | ||

Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise (Poly EAE)
Just like DSA for junior colleges, prior to taking the GCE “O” level exam, students can seek admission to all polytechnics via the Poly EAE or Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise, based on their aptitude and receive conditional offers for admission.
Eligibility criteria
- Each polytechnic has its own selection criteria. They will take into account a student’s demonstrated interest and aptitude for the courses that he/she is applying to.
- As part of the selection process the student may need to submit portfolios, and undergo interviews and aptitude tests.
- If selected, student will be given conditional offers before taking his/her O-Level examination
- To confirm the student’s admission, he/she will still need to meet the polytechnic admission criteria and the minimum entry requirements of the course that he/she is offered.
Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP)
- The Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) is a one-year programme that offers a practice-oriented curriculum taught by polytechnic lecturers, to better prepare polytechnic-bound N(A) students for entry into the relevant Polytechnic Diploma courses. This is an alternative to the Sec 5 year. PFP students are given provisional places in diploma programmes, subject to them passing all modules in the one-year PFP. The requirement to pass all modules ensures that students continue to work hard during their PFP year and are well prepared for polytechnic studies. Students who apply effort should have no difficulties in meeting the requirement.
- The PFP caters to students of the Sec 4N(A) cohort in the preceding year. The PFP will have about 2,000 places set aside each year across all five Polytechnics. More than 80% of Polytechnic Diploma courses will be offered under the PFP.
Under the SBB scheme, currently some N(A) students will do some of their subjects under the O-level syllabus as they did well for those subjects in their PSLE. These students can combine their ‘N’- and ‘O’-Level examination results to compute their eligibility. If a student takes the same subject at both ‘N’ and ‘O’ Levels, only the better grade will be computed into his or her aggregate.
The GCE “N” Level Grading System: | |
Marks by % | Grades |
≥ 75 | 1 |
70 - 74 | 2 |
65 - 69 | 3 |
60 - 64 | 4 |
50 - 59 | 5 |
≤ 49 | U |
The GCE ‘O’-Level Grade conversion matrix | |
O-level Grade | Aggregate Point for PFP |
A1 - B3 | 1 |
B4 - C6 | 2 |
D7 | 3 |
E8 | 4 |
F9 | Not usable |
Eligibility criteria
- To be eligible to apply forthe PFP, N(A) students must obtain:
- ELMAB3 (English, Mathematics, Best 3 Subjects) raw aggregate score of 12 points or better (excluding CCA bonus points) at the GCE ‘N’-Level examination; and
- the following subject-specific requirements:
For Courses featured in Group 1 | Minimum Required Grades |
---|---|
English Language Syllabus A | 3 |
Mathematics Syllabus A / Additional Mathematics | 3 |
One of the following relevant subjects:
Science
|
3 |
Any two other subjects excluding CCA | 4 |
For Courses featured in Group 2 | Minimum Required Grades |
---|---|
English Language Syllabus A | 2 |
Mathematics Syllabus A / Additional Mathematics | 3 |
One of the following relevant subjects:
|
3 |
Any two other subjects excluding CCA | 4 |
- These requirements are in place to ensure that students have the necessary foundations to attend the PFP.
- Bonus points will be awarded for good CCA grades. These bonus points will be used in computing the ELMAB3 net aggregate score for course posting within the PFP.
- Please note that eligibility to apply for PFP does not guarantee placement in the programme. Students placed on the PFP may or may not be posted to the course of his / her choice, subject to competition based on merit and the availability of places.
For illustration purposes
Case 1:
A student scored a raw aggregate score total of 9 points for his GCE “N” level exam with say, a subject taken at GCE “O: level syllabus. | |
Subject | Points |
---|---|
English Language at O-level | 1 |
Mathematics Syllabus A / Additional Mathematics | 4 |
Design and Technology | 1 |
Science (Physics, Biology) | 1 |
Mother Tongue | 2 |
Total raw aggregate score | 9 |
Case 2:
Another student scored a raw aggregate score total of 12 points for his GCE “N” level exam | |
Subject | Points |
---|---|
English Language Syllabus A | 2 |
Mathematics Syllabus A / Additional Mathematics | 3 |
Humanities (Social Studies, History) | 3 |
Science (Chemistry, Biology) | 2 |
Principles of Accounts | 2 |
Total raw aggregate score | 12 |
In the above illustration, it will be the student in case 2 that will stand a chance to be selected for the PFP, not the student in case 1, although he did better for his N-level examination.
The 2 CCA bonus points will be useful when it comes to the selection of courses, not in helping a student gain admission to the PFP.
